Overview

While Marina is famous for being one of the longest beaches in Chennai, it was also a backdrop for many key events during India’s Independence movement. In this tour we will take you on a walk along the Marina Beach and talk about some of the key personalities and events that helped in India gaining its independence. This is a live and online tour where you will be able to experience the Indian Independence movement at Marina Beach, from the comfort of your home. Our guide will be at the venue and you will join the live and interactive tour via video call over phone.

Gandhi Statue
We start from the Gandhi Statue point. This is arguably the most famous spot in the Marian Beach! We will tell you about Gandhiji’s Chennai connection. We will talk about how Gandhiji was in Chennai when the dreaded Rowlatt Act was passed in 1919 by British India and how he called for a nationwide protest.

Marina Beach
We are now at the statue of Subramaniya Bharati. Bharatiyar as he was fondly called, was one of the greatest Tamil poets and a key figure in the Independence movement. He wrote his first poem when he was 7! His songs on nationalism and freedom of India helped to rally the masses to support the Indian Independence Movement in Tamil Nadu.

Nungambakkam/Marina Beach
Annie Besant was part Irish and part British. But she was also one of the most famous citizens in the history of Chennai! She was the first women president of Indian National Congress in 1917. In the early part of 20th century, Annie Besant led the ‘Home Rule League’ movement alongside Bal Gangadhar Tilak. We will talk more about her role in India's freedom struggle.

Chennai (Madras)
On September 3, 1939 Netaji visited the Madras Presidency for the first time. Bose addressed a public meeting right here on the Marina Beach. More than a thousand people had come to listen to him. He travelled in an open Jeep to ‘Gandhi Peak’ on Bharathi Salai, Triplicane where he stayed for 3 days.

Vivekananda House
We are at Vivekananda House, an important landmark in Chennai is associated with the Sri Ramakrishna Math since 1897. Swami Vivekananda stayed here for nine days after his triumphant return from the West where he gave his famous speech at the world parliament of religions in Chicago. Chennai was his first port of call after return to India. We will talk more about him and the Marina connection.

Fort St. George
We are at the last destination of todays independence day tour. Fort St George was the first British Fortress in India. There are 3 main sections to the Fort. A Museum, Legislative buildings and St Mary Church – The first Anglican church in India. It is a great place to understand how British came to dominate India , their rule and finally how India won its independence. We will talk more about the role this fort played in India's freedom struggle.
